Sports Medicine

At FirstLight Health System, our Sports Medicine team is trained in providing specialized care available to athletes of all ages, sports and levels of competition and returning them to the game as quickly and as safely as possible. We know that sports injuries come in all shapes and sizes, and we are experts in the full range of chronic and acute problems related to living an active lifestyle. In collaboration with many other athletic organizations, leaders at FirstLight are coming together to STOP sports related injuries.

Thomas Mullin, MD, is a board-certified family physician specializing in Sports Medicine experienced in concussion management, diagnosing and treating acute injuries related to the musculoskeletal system (ankles, elbows,  feet, hips, knees, shoulders, and wrists), and chronic conditions including arthritis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and many more. He is also trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating injuries and complaints in athletes.

  • Casting, bracing and splinting
  • Concussion evaluation and management – including ImPACT® testing
  • Evaluation, management, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries
  • Fracture care
  • Medical problems in athletes
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Overuse injuries and stress fracture care
  • Soft tissue injury care including tendinitis, bursitis and synovitis
  • Sprains and strains care
  • Steroid and synvisc injections using ultrasound guidance

In addition, certified Athletic Training provides supportive care in the Sports Medicine clinic, in Rehabilitation Services, for community activities, and in local high school athletic departments. Mora, Hinckley-Finlayson, and Pine City high schools have been named Safe Sports Schools (SSS) by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) for the high quality of injury prevention offered through FirstLight and the Sports Medicine team. FirstLight athletic trainers also work alongside Pine City, East Central, Ogilvie and Rush City high school Sports teams and treat a variety of youth sports injuries. Meet our sports medicine team:
