Karen Renaud Awarded American Society for Clinical Lab Science Member of the Year

Each year, the ASCLS-MN (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science of Minnesota) names a member that has contributed great leadership to the organization. This year’s member of the year has been awarded to Karen Renaud MA, MLS(ASCP)cmSH from FirstLight Health System. ASCLS-MN remarks that “Karen has a strong work record, is an acknowledged resource and technical expert in her field, and is willing to share her experience and knowledge with others.”

Karen joined the ASCLS-MN in 1985, and was on the board for a number of years in Missouri acting as its membership chairperson, Karen then moved to Minnesota in the 1990’s where she was elected the Central Region Junior and Senior Director (2009-10), president-elect in 2011-12, and President and Past President 2013-14. She now volunteers on the Leadership Development/ Awards committee.

Karen’s career started at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in the hematology lab where she worked for 13 years, first as a tech and then was promoted to supervisor. She then pursued some additional schooling specializing in hematology and received her Master’s Degree in Health Services Management from Webster University in 1992.

Karen now is the Laboratory Manager at FirstLight Health System, where she started as the Laboratory and Imaging manager in 1998. In 2011, when Kanabec Hospital and Allina Clinics merged to FirstLight Health System, Karen’s title moved to exclusively Laboratory Manager with the addition of 3 clinics. “Karen represents expertise in her field, leadership within our organization, and dedication to patient success within the communities we serve.” comments Sandy Zutz-Wiczek, FirstLight’s Chief Operating Officer.

Karen works and lives in Mora, MN with her husband and three children where she is very active in her church and community.
